The name 3 In 1 refers to the fact that three different scoring formats are used in one round of golf. The format changes every six holes, rotating among three different formats. What formats are used? Whatever you want. But if used for a tournament, it's best to stick with better-known formats for 3 In 1.
For example:
- Holes 1-6, better ball
- Holes 7-12, alternate shot
- Holes 13-18, 2-man scramble
But as noted, when using 3 In 1 as part of your regular weekly outing with your golf buddies, you can make the three formats as wacky as you like.
Don't confuse 3 In 1 with Round Robin, in which the partners change every six holes but the format remains the same throughout.
