It's unorthodox for a golf course to start with a par-3 hole, and it's very unusual for a major championship course to do so. But that's how the Royal Lytham & St. Annes course opens.

Hole 1 Par
Men: 3
Women: 3

Hole 1 Yardages
Blue tees: 206 yards
Red tees: 198 yards
Green tees: 174 yards
Orange tees: 169 yards

Ian Woosnam entered the final round of the 2001 British Open tied for the lead. Alas, on this tee in that final round, Woosnam teed off with 15 clubs in his bag, rather than the maximum-allowed 14. The resulting penalty strokes - and the shock of the mistake - knocked Woosie woosy. David Duval wound up winning his only major that year.

Note about the pars/yardages cited on this and following gallery pages: The par for women refers to the Orange tees; the par for men refers to the Blue tees. The Orange tees have an overall par of 75 for women; the Blue tees have an overall par of 70 for men. (The Green and Red tees are both par-71.)
