Pine Needles Golf Club is one of the classic courses of the Carolinas. Located in Southern Pines, N.C., Pine Needles was designed by the legendary architect Donald Ross. The U.S. Women's Open was played at Pine Needles in 2001. Later, a restoration led by architect John Fought sought to restore the course's greens to Ross' original designs, and lengthened the course in an attempt to restore the shot values originally created by Ross.
The U.S. Women's Open returned to Pine Needles Golf Club in 2007. Built on sandy soil, Pine Needles rolls through a landscape treed with maples, holly, azaleas, dogwood, blackjack oaks and loblolly pines. Sandy hills frame holes and wayward shots can land atop beds of pine straw off the fairways.
