Penha Longa Golf Resort is located near the town of Sintra, Portugal, not too far from the capital of Lisbon. Set in the shadows of the Sintra Mountains and adjacent to a national park, Penha Long - which means "long rock" - is built on historic ground. In this area a monastery was built by one Friar Vasco Martins in 1355, and a church followed in 1390. Around the start of the 15th century, a palace was built and was used by the Portuguese Royal family for the next two centuries.
The photos in this gallery depict the Atlantic Course, one of two at the resort (the other is the 9-hole Monastery Course). The Penha Longa Atlantic Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and was the site of two Portugal Opens. The photographer, Thomas Klages, says the fairways run "uphill and down again with spectacular views through the hilly surrounding area. Much trees, lateral to the fairways, make the shots more difficult and wind is mostly always present."
