Just four years after it opened, Hazeltine hosted its first major: the 1966 U.S. Women's Open. It has since been the site of one more U.S. Women's Open (1977), two U.S. Opens (1970, 1991), two PGA Championships (2002, 2009), one U.S. Senior Open (1983), one U.S. Amateur (2006), and will host the Ryder Cup in 2016.
The golf course at Hazeltine National Golf Club was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and RTJ handled multiple course changes in ensuing years; his son, Rees Jones, has also made renovations.
Hazeltine is a private course known for a treed, rolling, parkland layout that is long (7,674 yards for the 2009 PGA Championship) and challenging (78.0 USGA course rating). The club Web site is at hngc.com.
