Top 5 New Golf Balls of 2005

By , About.com Guide

Here are our end-of-the-year selections for the best new golf balls of 2005:

1. Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x

The updated versions of Titleist's Pro V1 and Pro V1x balls lowered spin rates and added yards, keeping this powerhouse brand on top of the golf ball world. More info

2. Bridgestone Tour B330

Bridgestone's re-entry into the North American market was highlighted by this ball, the biggest and closest competition to Titleist's Pro V1 juggernaut. Like the Pro V1s, the Tour B330 ball is designed for better players with high swing speeds. (A golfer without a lot of clubhead speed won't be able to fully utilize the technology in this ball or the Pro V1s.) We know one pro who got a hole-in-one on his very first swing with this ball. If only we could all be so lucky.

3. Maxfli Black Max and Red Max

The Black Max is in the mold of the Pro V1 and Tour B330 balls, meaning those players with high swing speeds are able to take advantage of great technology. For less-skilled golfers (and smaller budgets), the Maxfli Red Max is all about distance and is a great alternative.

4. Titleist NXT Tour

Our favorite distance ball got an update in 2005 (along with several other balls in the Titleist lineup, including the Pro V1s), adding a few more yards while maintaining a soft feel.

5. Nike Mojo

Nike Mojo balls are cheap (compared to our top picks above) and go far. That's a combination that's hard to beat for recreational golfers.
