Top 4 New Utility/Hybrid Clubs of 2004

By Brent Kelley, About.com

As part of the About.com Golf "Best of 2004" equipment ratings, here are our selections for the best new hybrid clubs or utility clubs of 2004 (more selections on the Best of 2004 homepage; see also last year's picks in the 2003 rankings).

1. Callaway Big Bertha Heavenwoods

Callaway calls the Heavenwood "the first hybrids designed like a wood to play like an iron." We call them the best new hybrids of 2004. Shorter-shafted than comparable fairway woods, but with the workability of irons. More info

2. Precept ECU Utility Woods

Attractively designed and striking to look at, they play pretty darn well, too. Features Precept's elastomer compound insert inside the heads to reduce vibration. More info

3. La Jolla Club Knife Hybrids

La Jolla Club extended its Knife line in 2004 with the addition of the Knife Hybrids. They feature the same "blades," or rails, across the bottom of the sole that have made the Knife fairway woods popular. More info

4. Nickent 3DX Ironwoods

Attractive, playable and forgiving is what we called these clubs in our review earlier in 2004. These clubs incorporate Nickent's "Extreme 3D Weighting System," elements of which are easy to spot - such as weight plug in the sole of each club.
