The "greening" of golf - the pursuit of more environmentally friendly methods and materials - should be good for the environment and for the game. It should also be good for the balance sheets of companies that devise the best ways to capitalize on the emerging trend.

Dixon Golf has been producing golf balls for a relatively short period of time, but it's the first company to market a "green" golf ball. Dixon calls the ball "Earth."

The Dixon Earth ball is made from renewable and recycled and recyclable materials, from the cover to the core, and including the packaging.

But does the ball hold up to golfers' demands on the playability front? Dixon claims the Earth ball doesn't sacrifice distance, spin or feel, and that the ball "outperformed several three-piece urethane cover balls in competitive testing."

Dixon is also embarking on an innovative program to encourage users of the Earth ball to recycle old balls. Each Dixon Earth package includes a mailer; golfers can mail back used balls and receive a $1 credit for each ball returned, good toward the purchase of new balls.

A box of a dozen Dixon Earth balls has an MSRP of $39.95. Visit www.dixongolf.com for more info.
