The Solar Golf Top Kit is made by a company called Earth Care Products, Inc., and was among the "best new product" award winners at the 2009 PGA Merchandise Show. The product is aimed at golfers who own their own riding carts and who want to generate power via the sun.

Th solar panels are lightweight - only seven pounds - and are designed to be easy to install. How easy? They use the good ol' peel-and-stick method - peel away the backing, stick the solar panels on top of the cart.

An experienced do-it-yourselfer can probably complete installation (including the electrical wiring) in under 30 minutes, according to Earth Care Products' Michael Smoot. For the less DIY-inclined, the company is adding more golf cart dealers to its network in America, dealers who can handle the installation.

The peel-and-stick solar panels are designed to withstand 70mph winds and the company guarantees them against breakage in the event a wayward golf ball makes contact.

The panel is a "triple-junction thin cell amorphous film with three layers of semiconductors," Smoot explains. For laymen, what's important to know is that the company says the technology works - produces power - under all weather conditions, even under cloudy conditions, even in rain. All that's needed is daylight, not direct sunlight.

The kit is currently listed on the Earth Care Products Web site for $1,695, but the kit is eligible for Federal tax credits as a clean-energy provider. Visit www.GolfCarSolar.com for more information.
