Callaway Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids

Callaway Heavenwood hybrid golf club
The Big Bertha Heavenwoods are hybrid clubs offered by Callaway, first introduced in 2004.

Callaway Golf

When Callaway Golf debuted the "Heavenwood" monicker, the company applied it to a series of hybrid clubs that were designed to replace 1-irons through 5-irons in golfers' bags. Of course, today almost no companies even make a 1-iron anymore, and 2-irons are getting harder and harder to find. So 1- and 2-iron replacements aren't even necessary in today's golf equipment world.

Those first Callaway Heavenwood hybrids debuted in 2004, with compact head sizes and shaft lengths that were longer than corresponding irons but shorter than fairway woods. Our original story about them appears below. But what about today?

Does Callaway Still Make Heavenwoods?

Yes, but they aren't the same clubs that first arrived on the scene in 2004. Callaway has re-used the "Heavenwood" name several times since the original hybrids were unveiled. But while the originals were hybrids, Callaway has been more likely to use the name on fairway woods in the years since.

A recent example is the Great Big Bertha Heavenwood that was a fairway wood with a clubhead the size of a 7-wood but the shaft length of a 4-wood.

Original Report: Callaway Launches Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids

(This is our original story about those first Heavenwood hybrids. We first published the following on Sept. 1, 2004.)

Has Callaway found a little slice of heaven for golfers? That's what the company is hoping for its new Callaway Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrid clubs.

Callaway has dubbed the Big Bertha Heavenwoods "the first hybrids designed like a wood to play like an iron."

Like all hybrids or utility clubs, the Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids are designed to replace hard-to-hit long irons in golf bags. Hybrids offer the best of both irons and woods: the accuracy and control of a long iron with the distance of a fairway wood.

"While higher-lofted fairway woods can be a strong alternative to long irons, certain average golfers have difficulty with the length of the clubs, and more accomplished players prefer a more compact head design," the company states in announcing the Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids. "The shape and size of the new Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids address both these concerns while providing the added distance of fairway woods and the accuracy and workability of irons."

The Heavenwoods will be available in five lofts corresponding to 1-iron through 5-iron. They feature an elongated, low-profile head design that creates a very low center of gravity, which helps players get the ball up into the air.

Callaway boasts that the Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids' modified War Bird head design also "promotes clean contact with the ball in various turf conditions ranging from tight lies to deep rough. The extended heel-to-toe head shape features maximized perimeter weighting, which raises the moment of inertia (MOI) for increased stability and more resistance to twisting on off-center shots."

Each Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrid club is longer, lengthwise, than its corresponding iron, but shorter than comparable fairway woods.

The clubs are numbered 1H (14 degrees of loft), 2H (17 degrees), 3H (20 degrees), 4H (23 degrees) and 5H (26 degrees).

The standard graphite shaft for the Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrids is the RCH 75w; the standard steel shaft is the Big Bertha Uniflex.

The MSRP (at time of introduction) for each Big Bertha Heavenwood Hybrid is $200 with steel shafts and $225 with graphite shafts.
