The Bottom Line

The Macgregor V-Foil Eye-O-Matic driver is a good, solid club. More experienced players will be fine with either version (M38, 380CC head; or M42, 420cc head). We tested the larger clubhead (M42) and believe less experienced or higher-handicap players will definitely want to go with the M42, which offers a larger hitting area.

Guide Review - Macgregor M42 V-Foil Eye-O-Matic Driver

The V-Foil Eye-O-Matic driver is a very solid club. Solid is a good word for it, because that's what the golfer feels at impact. A good, solid, smash.

Macgregor's own testing of the M42 V-Foil Eye-O-Matic, up against comparable drivers from Cobra, Callaway, TaylorMade and Cleveland, showed that the Eye-O-Matic was middle-of-the-road in distance performance.

That's what we would have guessed after playing it. The distance performance is, again, solid, but not spectacular. The club's V-Foil weighting system adds qualities that might help some golfers keep their drivers a little bit straighter, or help them get their drivers a little bit higher. Those qualities are nice, but they are not pronounced.

The major drawback to the V-Foil Eye-O-Matic driver is the loud, tinny sound it makes at impact. Macgregor has tried to turn that into a positive with the slogan, "This is what long sounds like." Catchy slogan, but not a catchy sound. It's not something that would prevent anyone from buying the club, but it's definitely not an ear-pleasing attribute.

So while it doesn't sound solid, it certainly feels and performs that way. The black-and-white headcover featuring the Macgregor logo is attractive, and the Macgregor V-Foil Eye-O-Matic driver is priced a little less than many of the competing drivers from the top companies.

In a word: Solid.
