Blended iron sets are ones in which the irons progress from more forgiveness-oriented in the long irons to more spin-and-control-focused in the short irons. This usually is accomplished by a progression from cavityback to muscleback through the set.

And that's just what Titleist is doing with its newest set of irons, the Titleist 735.CM Forged Irons. The 2, 3, and 4 irons in the set feature cavitybacks; the mid-irons have a shallow cavity; and the short irons employ a full muscleback. It's the first-ever blended iron set from Titleist.

The 735.CM, Titleist says, is targeted at "... the skilled player seeking the ideal combination of shot control, maneuverability and playability."

The cavity isn't the only thing progressing in this blended set, however; Titleist also makes slight progressions in the blade heights, blade lengths, offset, topline, center of gravity and moment of inertia through the set, tweaking each club for maximum performance.

The set is available in two different alloys: forged stainless steel or chrome plated, forged 1025 mild carbon steel. The stainless steel set offers more custom options with a non-glare finish. The carbon steel version provides a softer feel with a bright finish and is the version preferred by Titleist's tour staff.

Something else that's new in this set from Titleist is the modified bore-through hosel. As Titleist explains it, this design feature of the 735.CM irons "removes non-essential mass from the hosel and repositions it directly behind the hitting area. This creates the optimal center of gravity for consistent launch conditions. The modified bore-thru is finished with a lightweight polymer (chrome model) or aluminum (stainless model) pin that dampens vibration and improves sound and feel."

The Titleist 735.CM Forged Irons are available in 2 through PW. The MSRP at launch (shipping to pro shops begins Aug. 15) for the stainless steel model is $112 per iron with steel shafts, $129 with graphite; for the chrome model, $120 per iron with steel shafts, $137 with graphite.

The suggested retail prices for the Forged Stainless model is $112/per iron with steel shafts and $129/per iron with graphite shafts. The 735.CM Chrome model is $120/per iron with steel shafts and $137/per iron with graphite shafts.
