Nike Golf's premium Nike One golf balls are getting an update for 2006. The Nike One Platinum and Nike One Black balls will be sold in new packaging, but the changes are more than just cosmetic - both balls have new features that affect their performance.
First, the packaging: rather than the traditional flat, 12-pack box at retail, the updated Nike One balls will be sold in a cube (picture four sleeves of three balls each standing on their end, and boxed). The packages look nifty and it's likely a good marketing move.
But we don't care about marketing, we care about performance, right? So what are the important changes to the Nike One Platinum and Nike One Black?
The One Platinum will have a modified core, while the One Black gets changes to its cover and dimple pattern.
"For the One Platinum, we wanted to find a way to add more distance to a ball that is known for its incredible spin control and feel around the greens," said Rock Ishii, Nike Golf's Director of Product Development. "Conversely, with the One Black, we wanted to take a ball that is already known for its distance and add more spin control and feel to it."
The new One Platinum features an enhanced "Progressive Density Core" that is softer in the center and firmer towards its edge. This construction is designed to further reduce excess spin off the tee in order to maximize distance and accuracy.
The new One Black features a thinner cover and redesigned 408-dimple pattern. The new design is intended to minimize drag for extra distance.
