The Stimp Series putters from Louisville Golf have, until recently, come in three varieties: the Stimp 8, Stimp 10 and Stimp 12. The number after the name corresponds to green speed: If you play on greens of average speed, the company recommends the Stimp 10. The Stimp 8 is for slower greens and Stimp 12 for faster greens.
The difference in the putters is in the form of weighted screws. The putter geared to slower greens uses a little more weight than the one for average greens, and the one for average greens uses a little more weight than the one geared for fast greens.
Now Louisville Golf, the last major manufacturer of golf equipment still producing persimmon clubs, has a new variety: Simply, the Stimp.
The Stimp Putter incorporates the weight characteristics of the three other Stimp Series putters by making the weighted screws interchangeable. Playing on fast greens today? Switch to the lighter screws.
"We have incorporated a new technology that uses a pair of weight ports in the face which allows the golfer to create three different putters from one fixed design," said Mike Just, Louisville Golf President. "The new Stimp putter is also larger, which gives the putter a higher moment of inertia (MOI). And the weights are positioned on the heel and toe of the face, increasing the MOI, making for a very accurate putter with an extremely solid feel."
The new Stimp putter is made from persimmon and comes in a half-shaft offset model and a center-shafted model. Each model is available in either a black or red stain finish. A brass face insert and soleplate are used to create a uniformed feel and soft touch.
"This putter gives the golfer the versatility to choose a weight that will work best for them on the course they are playing," added Just. "While on the practice green the golfer can feel what speed the greens are rolling, then adjust the putter accordingly. Even golfers who play the same course every time can utilize this putter based upon if the greens are cut that day or not."
Louisville Golf is quick to point out that the Stimp conforms to USGA rules. However, it would be a violation of the rules for any golfers to make adjustments to the putter during a round. The golfer must select the weighting properties he desires before a round starts.
Each Stimp putter comes with an adjustment tool and three sets of weights. On the Louisville Golf website, the Stimp retails (at the time of this writing) for $140.
