Tiger Woods won his second U.S. Open title in 2002, and the eighth major of his career.

Woods finished ahead of a leaderboard that included Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Nick Faldo in the Top 5, but none of those stars seriously threatened Woods' victory. Woods won wire-to-wire, just as he did in his first U.S. Open win in 2000.

Garcia was in second place as the final round began, but four strokes behind Woods, and Garcia lost a couple more strokes to Woods throughout the fourth round. Mickelson gained on Woods, and at one point on the back nine closed to within two, but wound up three strokes behind in solo second.

The 2002 U.S. Open was played on the Black Course at Bethpage State Park in New York. Bethpage Black was the first municipal golf course ever to host a U.S. Open.
