How Singh Won the 2000 Masters

It was career major No. 2 for Vijay Singh at the 2000 Masters tournament, and the first Green Jacket for Singh.

Singh opened with an even-par round that put him tied for 10th, four strokes off the lead.

After a 67 in the second round, though, Singh jumped into a tie for second place, on shot behind David Duval. Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson were tied with Singh.

But paying in tough, windy conditions, in the third round, Singh took control of the tournament with a score 70 that boosted him to a three-stroke advantage over second-round leader Duval. Duval and Els carded 74s in that round, Mickelson a 76.

Singh closed with a round of 69, maintaining that three-stroke edge, with Els runner-up and Duval and Loren Roberts tied for third.

Singh's lead was only one over Duval as he completed the 12th hole in the final round, but on the 13th Duval hit his second shot into the water, while Singh birdied the hole. Singh wasn't challenged after that.

Greg Norman opened the tournament with a round of 80, but recovered to finish in a tie for 11th place. Padraig Harrington, a future 3-time major championship winner (but no Masters titles), played at Augusta National for the first time this year.

Jack Nicklaus, at age 60, made the cut - his final cut in The Masters or any other major. Meanwhile, 1957 Masters champ Doug Ford, at age 78, played the tournament for the final time, shooting 94 in the first round and withdrawing.

Tiger Woods finished in fifth place, and this was the only major of 2000 he failed to win. Woods did win the 2001 Masters, though, to complete the "Tiger Slam" (holding all four major titles at the same time.)
