Recap and Scores for the 2000 British Open Golf Tournament
The Open Championship returned to St. Andrews in 2000, and another great used the opportunity to say goodbye to this championship. Lee Trevino, a 2-time Open champion, played the tournament for the final time, shooting 80-77.
But 2000 was the year of Tiger Woods, and the 2000 British Open belonged to Tiger, too. Woods was untouchable on The Old Course, playing in such complete control that he did not hit into a single bunker throughout the tournament. He shot in the 60s all four rounds, winning by a final margin of eight strokes over runners-up Thomas Bjorn and Ernie Els.
For Woods, it was his first British Open win, and his fourth win in a major; and it was his 21st victory in a PGA Tour event.
It was also the second leg of the so-called "Tiger Slam." In 2000, Woods won the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship. He then won the 2001 Masters, at which point he held all four major championship trophies simultaneously.
