Kiawah Island is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east. To the west, it's separated from the South Carolina mainland by the Kiawah River, with Charleston to the northeast.

The Kiawah Island Golf Resort is one of the most-acclaimed in the world. Its five spectacular golf courses are led by the famed Ocean Course, site of the Ryder Cup's "War by the Shore" in 1991.

The photo above shows hole No. 18 on the resort's Oak Point course, which features wide areas of windswept fairways alongside salt marshlands and interspersed with densely forested areas of live oaks.
