"The Big Break"

Meet the Contestants

By , About.com Guide

A look at the 10 contestants in "The Big Break" (information provided by The Golf Channel):

Randy Block
• Age: 41
• Residence: San Antonio, Tex.
When Randy isn't on the lookout for the nearest fishing hole, he usually has a golf club in his hands. He took on the role of "camp counselor" during the show, always looking out for the other guys while keeping an eye on his game. He claims amateur golfer status, but having caddied for and competed against professionals he believes he has the game to make it on tour. Randy is not one to take himself or life too seriously; a new perspective he gained as a cancer survivor. And that also goes for his golf game. He sports a donkey head cover on his driver, saying, "Sometimes I hit shots that make me feel like a jackass." A native of Chicago, Randy is the reigning San Antonio Open champion and says his proudest moment in golf was beating veteran tour player Andy Bean straight up in a pro-am event. A career Army soldier - he spent 20 years in the U.S. Army as a sergeant first class - he played on the Army golf team and is the 1994 Armed Forces Champion.

Jeff Brown
• Age: 41
• Residence: Hampton, Ga.
A true, Southern gentleman, Jeff’s fireplug stature may not intimidate you, but his golf game will. His thick accent made fellow contestants think he spoke a foreign language. Not a product of collegiate golf, Jeff is a self-taught scratch golfer and family man. Although he placed third in the 1994 Georgia State Mid-Amateur, he says his proudest moment on the golf course was when his 9-year-old son launched a 3-wood on a 120-yard, par 3 – with a carry over water – to within six feet of the pin, subsequently beating his dad on the hole by two strokes. Golf is more than a hobby to Jeff, who claims Arnold Palmer as his sports hero. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years.

Charles Calhoun
• Age: 36
• Residence: Marietta, Ohio
Having one of the most outgoing and entertaining personalities in the group, Charles says he’s actually quiet in everyday life. He believes it is his destiny to go down in history among the many prominent African-Americans who worked hard to make their dreams come true. He has made his way through the golf industry, having caddied and worked on the grounds crew at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio (site of The Memorial Tournament on the PGA Tour), and coached at Marietta (Ohio) College and Ohio University. He also worked as a salesman, truck driver and construction worker. He claims professional status, having played on a few minor golf tours for the tournament experience, but has yet to make a major professional breakthrough. Like his grandparents, who he lists as his heroes, Charles believes in never giving up and making something out of nothing.

Steve Duemig
• Age: 49
• Residence: Clearwater, Fla.
The Big Break gave Steve a chance to get out from behind the microphone and in front of a camera. As a sports talk show host at a Tampa-area radio station (his fellow contestants dubbed him “Talk Show”), Steve tries his best to get on the course before going on the air each day. Before his radio days, he worked as a PGA Club professional who always believed that he could compete with tour players. He recalls his career low round of 63, and the times he beat two-time U.S. Open Champion Lee Janzen during a friendly round, and earned a $500 skin at a celebrity skins challenge in a group that included PGA Tour players John Huston and Dave Stockton Jr.
