The U.S. Open is played at a public golf course, Bethpage Black, for the first time.

Juli Inkster wins the U.S. Women's Open at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., where she had previously won a U.S. Women's Amateur. She becomes the first woman and second golfer (the first being Jack Nicklaus) to win a U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open at the same course.
Carol Semple Thompson wins her fourth consecutive U.S. Senior Women's Amateur title, in the process setting a consecutive match-play winning streak record of 24 matches.

Playing in the Champions Tour AT&T Canada Senior Open Championship, Walter Morgan, age 61, shoots a round of 60, setting the record for youngest age-shooter on the major professional tours.
