En route to winning his second Masters, Jimmy Demaret is the first golfer to shoot all four rounds under par in the event.

Babe Didrikson Zaharias wins the British Women's Amateur, the first American to do so.

The USGA reduces the Rules of Golf from 61 rules to 21, but the R&A does not follow suit.

The U.S. Open is the first golf tournament to be televised, but it is broadcast only in the St. Louis, Mo., area.

Jim Ferrier wins the PGA Championship, becoming the first Australian golfer to win a major.

The Vardon Trophy, which had been awarded on a points system up to this point, now goes to the PGA Tour golfer with the lowest stroke average. Jimmy Demaret wins with a 69.9 average.
