Walter Travis wins the last of his three U.S. Amateur titles.

A 9-hole course is built in Kobe, Japan, by British residents. It is the first golf course in Japan.

Oakmont Country Club opens near Pittsburgh, Pa.

Spalding, which as been using gutta-percha as the cover material on its Haskell-style golf balls, switches to balata. Balata, also produced by a tropical tree, is more durable than gutta-percha.
