John Ball wins the first of his record eight British Amateur championships.

A golf club in Antwerp is the first in Belgium and the second in continental Europe.

John Reid, a Scotsman living in New York, builds three golf holes and promotes the game to friends. He and others form St. Andrew's Golf Club, which is generally credited with being the first longlasting club formed specifically for golf in the U.S. It's still in existance, making it the oldest continuously operating golf club in the U.S.
