This was only the second time the Presidents Cup had been played, and it was played at the same place that was the site of inaugural 1994 Presidents Cup: Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia. (Only in 1998 did the Presidents Cup take place outside the U.S.)
Team USA dominated the opening fourball session, winning four of the five matches, and led 7.5 to 2.5 at the end of the day.
On Day 2, it reversed: the International won a session - the afternoon foursomes - by 4-1. So at the end of the second day the gap narrowed to a 1-point lead for USA.
And that's how it stayed after the 6-6 split in singles matches on Day 3. The U.S. secured the full point it needed for the outright win in the final singles match when Fred Couples defeated Vijay Singh, 2 and 1.
Mark O'Meara went 5-0-0 for Team USA, and David Duval 4-0-0. O'Meara and Duval partnered for three victories. Ernie Els, playing his first Presidents Cup, lead Team International with a 3-1-1 record.
