Medalist

By Brent Kelley, About.com

Definition: Most simply, the winner of a stroke play (or "medal play") golf tournament.

The term "medalist" might most often be heard in reference to qualifying rounds, particularly qualifying rounds for match-play tournaments.

For example, there might two rounds of stroke play to determine the players who will advance into a match play championship. The person posting the lowest score in those stroke play qualifying rounds will be called the "medalist" or "low medalist."
