Definition: Golf clubs will not allow golfers onto the course if there is frost on the ground. Footprinting is the reason. Live grasses that are covered with frost will be killed if walked on. The dead grass will turn brown, leaving a trail of brown footprints. Footprinting can occur on wilted areas, too, but without the discoloration - merely a noticeably depressed area that should spring back eventually when the grass is watered.
