The Bottom Line
Another great Sonartec club, the SS-03 fairways series (3-wood was model tested) provides great distance and control, with low, boring trajectory.
Pros
- Great distance.
- Great control.
- Very forgiving on off-center hits.
Cons
- No alignment aid on crown.
- Low trajectory tougher on weaker players.
Description
- The SS-03 is the deeper-faced option among Sonartec's fairway woods (SS-01 shallow, SS-02 midfaced).
- Heel-to-toe length is shortest of the three, with SS-01 being longest and SS-02 in the middle.
- Overall surface size of the SS-03 clubface is roomier, allowing better working of the ball.
- The 3-wood tested featured a 13-degree loft, 43-inch shaft length and 160cc clubhead.
- Shaft on model tested: Penley Pre-Spined Stiff Flex.
- Fujikura and Graphite Design shafts are also used by Sonartec; custom options are also available.
- Clubhead features Sonartec's "Driving Cavity" on the sole, which puts more mass behind the clubface.
- Ball flight makes the club better for players who don't need help getting ball airborne.
Guide Review - Sonartec SS-03 3-Wood
The first negatives is more a minor caveat: There's no alignment arrow or dot on the crown (although the club sets up very intuitively). The low, penetrating trajectory lessens the effect of wind and produces great roll. If you have problems getting the ball airborne, that can cause problems, however. The Sonartec Driving Cavity puts more mass behind the clubface, and its balanced weighting lessens the effect of off-center hits. The result is long shots that are easy to control. A great club, very well liked by all who tried it - just a hair short of the SS-02 7-wood tested at the same time. Click on "Read Full Review" below for more info on Sonartec.
