Ping's Doc17 putter is one huge putter. How big is it? It's more than 6 1/2 inches in length from heel to toe. That's a half-foot long! That's so long that the Doc17 nearly buts up against the USGA limit on putter sizes.

The Doc17 has the highest moment of inertia (MOI) of any Ping putter yet made. The Doc17, fully milled from high-grade aluminum, features a semicircle shape and has been used on the PGA, European, LPGA and Nationwide Tours.

It's exact length is 17.02 centimeters (6.7 inches), and its size and weight placement expands perimeter weighting to new levels.

"Visually, this putter represents another major departure for a Ping putter," said Ping Chairman and CEO John Solheim, whose company introduced the radically-shaped Craz-E model earlier this year. "Technically, it follows our design strategy of continually pushing the limits of perimeter weighting and center of gravity location. Its shape really opens some doors for us from a performance standpoint."

The semicircle shape of the Doc17 positions the majority of weight on the extreme perimeter and far away from the center of gravity to create an extremely high moment of inertia. The sole design keeps weight low and is contoured to provide a balance and feel that makes stroking putts of all lengths easier.

In addition to pushing the technology curve, the new design measures right up to the proposed USGA limit on putter body length of seven inches.

"It got the USGA's attention," said Solheim. "It's right up to the proposed limit. But they've reviewed it and it conforms."

The putter began shipping May 17. Its MSRP is $220.
