Titleist is introducing two new forged iron models that will hit retail shops in April. The new sets are designed to replace the company's venerable DCI franchise while complementing Titleist's 690.MB and 690.CB irons.

The Forged Stainless 704.CB and Forged Stainless 804.OS are "designed to connect serious golfers with the better-player-preferred forged iron construction." Titleists says the 704.CB (for "cavity back") and 804.OS (for "oversize") provide "broader reach and more playability features than" the Forged 600 Series models.

The new sets were play-tested by some of the world’s top tour players, club professionals and competitive amateurs prior to being introduced to the marketplace. The 704.CB irons are being played on the PGA Tour by Brad Faxon, Ben Curtis, Arron Oberholser, Tom Pernice, Jr., Peter Jacobsen, Duffy Waldorf and Aaron Barber among others. Billy Mayfair is playing the 804.OS model.

Both new irons feature an inner cavity weight shelf design that puts added mass behind the face impact area. The overall result is a soft but solid feel.

Titleist used a multi-step forging process in combination with high-grade stainless steel to create a thinner face design. The result is increased cavity volume and, the company says, an improved overall weight distribution and center of gravity (CG) location. The higher-volume cavity produces a higher moment of inertia for improved playability.

The 704.CB and 804.OS irons also feature a new “near U” scoreline design that provides more groove volume for consistent spin performance from a variety of conditions, Titleist says. A high-performance sole design with a blunted leading edge and enough sole width keeps the club from digging. The bounce angle specifications are designed to reduce skip in firmer conditions.

Forged Stainless 704.CB

The Forged Stainless 704.CB is a high-performance, midsize cavity back iron the offers balance between forgiveness and shotmaking.

The 704.CB is aimed at highly skilled golfers to low-double-digit-handicap golfers.

The 704.CB offers a shallower heel profile and rounded topline. Its sole width and inner cavity provide a lower center of gravity in long irons. Its standard loft and progressive offset offer a traditional trajectory in mid- and short irons.

Titleist says the 704.CB offers better feel and playability compared to the DCI 762 irons.

The 704.CB irons come with True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shafts stock, and Titleist Victory Velvet full cord round grips. MSRP for a set of 8 irons is $899. Sets should be in golf shops in April.

Forged Stainless 804.OS

The 804.OS offers high-performance, oversize irons that provide game-improvement features in a traditional blade shape.

The face area of the 804.OS is larger than that of the 704.CB. It has a larger, higher-volume back cavity for added forgiveness and playability. Enhanced offset helps square the face.

Titleist calls the 804.OS "the most forgiving iron in the Titleist family."

The 804.OS is targeted for a wide range of golfers, from highly skilled to double-digit handicappers.

The 804.OS features a shallower heel profile and rounded - but thicker - topline. A wider sole, shorter hosel length and enhanced offset produce higher flying long irons, Titleist says, while the traditional blade shape, progressive offset and stronger lofts provide length and control in the mid- and short irons.

The 804.OS irons are available with lightweight NS Pro 970 steel shafts or the Titleist 3980 graphite shaft, and Titleist Victory Velvet Rubber grips. MSRP for a set of eight irons is $899 in steel, and $1,080 with graphite. The 804.OS will be available in golf shops in April.
