Mizuno Calls MP-001 a "Crowning Achievement"

With a play on words, Mizuno introduced the MP-001 driver and fairway woods by calling them a "crowning achievement." That's because the MP-001 driver and fairway woods feature a carbon fiber composite crown on the clubhead.

Carbon fiber is a third less weighty than titanium. So by switching from titanium to a carbon fiber composite in the crown, Mizuno's engineers were able to add more weigh to the sole and back of the clubhead. A lower, deeper center of gravity was created, which helps get the ball up in the air on a more optimum launch angle.

Mizuno also added "balance grooves," which position weight toward the heel to help square the clubhead at both address and at impact.

And of course, all of this is on top of the The "Grain Flow Forged" titanium in the driver clubface. The The MP-001 driver also features the next generation of Mizuno's "CORTECH" multi-thickness face design. CORTECH now utilizes five multi-thickness areas to generate the maximum Coefficient of Restitution (COR) the USGA allows.

"Each element of the forged titanium face in the MP-001ä is designed to enhance initial ball velocity from every spot on the club face," said Dick Lyons, Vice President and General Manager, Golf Division for Mizuno USA.

The MP-001 driver clubhead consists of a carbon fiber composite crown, a Grain Flow Forged Beta titanium face, a hi-tech titanium body, sole, and hosel. Mizuno's new Exsar 60 graphite shaft is standard. Also standard on the MP-001 will be the Golf Pride Tour Velvet 58 Round grip. Custom options are available through Mizuno's Custom Club department. Suggested retail price for the MP-001 driver is $499.99. Left-hand models are scheduled to be added for Spring, 2004.

The MP-001 fairway woods also feature the carbon fiber composite crown with a stainless steel one-piece body. A new speed plate sole design on the MP-001 fairway woods utilizes three recessed areas to minimize turf drag and glide through tight grass or long rough.

The MP-001 fairway woods are available in lofts of 13.5°, 15.0°, 16.5°, 18.0°, and 21.0°. The Exsar 60 graphite shaft is the standard graphite shaft option while the True Temper Dynamic Gold wood shaft is standard for players who prefer steel. Also standard on the MP-001 fairway woods will be the Golf Pride Tour Velvet ’58 Round grip. Suggested retail price for MP-001 fairway woods is $299.99 graphite and $249.99 steel.
