The "SZ" in "King Cobra SZ" stands for "sweet zone," which Cobra says on this club is expanded to produce a hotter clubface.
The King Cobra SZ replaces the King Cobra SS line. The SS drivers were the best-selling drivers on the market in May through August of 2003, according to Golf Datatech.
The SZ, Cobra says, improves on the SS design with "nine hot point across the clubface for greater carry distance and improved accuracy." And that's the result of three key design features:
New Milled Rhombus Oval Insert technology combined with a larger face
area provides greater face flex.
A new, visible Dual Weighting System on the sole moves the center of
gravity lower and back to promote a higher moment of inertia for greater
stability.
Accuracy is also improved due to lower spin variance across the 9
points via modified (flatter) bulge and roll on the face.
According to Cobra, these design features combine to provide the maximum allowable energy transfer and a higher C.O.R. over a larger hitting area.
Cobra is taking extra steps to make sure consumers get plenty of information when shopping right from the club itself. The driver sole plate features the traditional King Cobra word mark, and identifies the head volume, degrees of loft, maximum C.O.R. of .830, the size of the sweet zone and milled titanium material from which it is constructed. The specific gram weight, flex, flex point and manufacturer is identified on each shaft.
Information on Specs and Features
The information below is quoted from news releases provided by Cobra Golf.
Models and Lofts: The new driver line includes the King Cobra SZ 440 and 400 models in lofts of 7.5, 9.0 and 10.5 degrees. It is also offered in 400 SZ Men's (9.0, 10.5 degrees) and Seniors' (11.0 degree) Offset and 355 SZ Women's (13.5 degree) Offset.
Milled Titanium Rhombus Oval Face Insert: A rhombus-shaped center pad and thinner titanium ring creates a larger and hotter Sweet Zone. The rhombus is placed at the perfect angle to maximize the dynamics of the swing, and creates greater response across the club face for maximum ball speed.
Larger, Hotter Club Face: Low toe and heel expansion promotes greater face flex and forgiveness for bigger, hotter nine points of optimal C.O.R.
Dual Weighting System: Dual 304T steel inserts placed low in the back of the club head help pinpoint the club's center of gravity. The weighting varies by model. Each model has a center of gravity location precisely controlled for optimal launch angle and spin rate for relevant player type. This creates a much more efficient energy transfer for optimal ball flight. The weighting system provides a high moment of inertia and "left bias", eliminating the "high right" miss common to larger headed drivers, and greater forgiveness on off-center hits.
Plasma Weld: A thinner, more consistent weld for greater consistency and forgiveness across the entire nine points of the face. Eliminates the uneven weld bead of standard TIG welding found on most clubs.
Lightweight Custom Graphite Shafts: Each shaft has been custom designed for each club head to optimize the performance of each model and produce high swing speeds for greater distance and accuracy. The King Cobra SZ drivers feature stock Graphite Design, Aldila and Mitsubishi Rayon shafts.
Golf Pride Tour Velvet Grip: Custom made featuring a new softer compound than the industry standard. Provides optimum feel and firmness for control and confidence.
