Tommy Two Gloves Wins "Big Break VII"

Wednesday May 23, 2007
Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey is the champion of "The Big Break VII."

Two Gloves defeated Ashley Gomes in the finale of the championship match that began last week with Mike Foster dropping out after nine holes of stroke play. Gainey and Gomes continued with nine holes of match play in Tuesday night's episode.

Gainey took over from the start, bombing one of his 320-yard drives on the opening par-5, hitting a 5-iron from 223 yards to about 12 feet, and making the putt for eagle. He went 2-up on the second hole, and Ashley was never able to cut into the lead.

Tommy claimed the title on the seventh hole when Ashley missed a par putt. So Gainey wins, 3 and 2.

Gainey is the best male player in the history of the show, at least if judged by the contestants' accomplishments after their "Big Break" appearances (Gainey first appearaed on "Big Break IV"). I posted an article yesterday detailing past champs' performances in the Tour exemptions they gained through the show, and included Tommy's post-show performances, as well (on page 2).

For winning "Big Break VII," Gainey gets into the Nationwide Tour Cox Classic, July 26-29 in Omaha, Neb. But it's a good bet Gainey will receive another sponsor exemption or two before then, after his performance last week in the Nationwide Tour BMW Charity Classic. There, Gainey was in second place for three rounds until crashing in the final round, but still finished 30th.
