Equipment Update: New Drivers, Irons, Shafts

Tuesday April 24, 2007
What's the latest word in equipment? Our latest roundup of new equipment goes over a new driver from KZG, new value-priced drivers and irons, an ultra-premium shaft from Graphite Design, and an outerwear maker's raingear system.

Go below the fold to read all about it ...

KZG GF 460 Driver
KZG's newest driver is the GF 460, in which the "GF" refers to the "Gravitational Force Technology." That's KZG's term for using weight ports and weighted screws to adjust the center of gravity of the driver, and thereby adjust its playing characteristics.

The GF 460 Driver has two weight ports, and weighted screws weighting 1.5, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 grams, respectively. Changing the combination of weights can change the driver's launch angle and draw/fade bias, as well as its swingweight.

The weighting system in the KZG GF 460 driver is designed to be adjusted only by a professional clubfitter because, the company reports, "It has been found that many golfers adjust weights every time they mis-hit a drive; as a result, they can’t determine the correct positioning for optimal performance and launch."

The MSRP of the GF 460 driver is $439 with graphite shaft and $409 with steel shaft. Visit www.kzg.com for more info.

New Driver, Irons from G.R.I.P.
Golf Research in Play (G.R.I.P.) has introduces its 460cc Beta Titanium Driver and the OWT Wide Sole Irons set.

A classically shaped driver, the G.R.I.P. 460cc Beta Titanium Driver offers a deep clubface and rear-sole weighting to help move the center of gravity rearward and elevate moment of inertia. The driver comes in 9-, 10.5- and 12-degree lofts, with graphite or steel shaft, and with an MSRP of $129.95.

The G.R.I.P. OWT Wide Sole Irons are made from 431 Stainless Steel. "OWT" stands for Optimal Wide Sole Trajectory Technology, a widened sole with undercut cavity back channel; there's also a thickened topline and progressive offset (more offset in the longer irons, minimal offset in the shorter irons).

The irons are available in several set configurations for men and women, plus a "hybrid lover's" version. A variety of shafts are available, both steel and graphite. The MSRP for a set of G.R.I.P. OWT Wide Sole Irons with graphite shafts is $299.95.

Visit www.gogrip.com for more info or to order online.

Graphite Design Tour AD Quattro Tech shaft
Graphite Design International's latest "ultra-premium" shaft is the Tour AD Quattro Tech. The shaft has been popular in Japan (land of the ultra-premium golf equipment) and among touring pros on the Japan PGA Tour but is now available in the U.S. through Graphite Design's retailers.

The "Quattro" refers to the shaft's "four-axis" design, in which the graphite fibers line the shaft surface at four different angles. GDI says this structure produces superior stability through impact, especially at high swing speeds.

The low-kickpoint shaft is suitable for drivers or fairway woods and comes in weights ranging from 54 to 87 grams, and five flexes. The MSRP is $380 per shaft. Graphite Design Web site

Zero Restriction Rainplay System
The Rainplay System from Zero Restriction Outerwear focuses on providing the complete set of rain gear for the golfer: jacket, slacks, bucket hat and gloves.

The ZR Jacket is made from waterproof Gore-Tex and incorporates such features as telescoping cuffs and expanding back pleats for ease and freedom of movement. The cotton/lycra ZR "Wetter the Better" Rain Gloves are designed to provide a good grip even in wettest conditions. The ZR Slacks feature leg zippers for easy on/off and snap-system ankles for close fit. And the ZR Bucket Hat has a wide brim to direct water away from the golfer's body. Zero Restriction Web site
