Quick Tip: What Stockton Told Sorenstam

A few year back, when she was on the cusp of breaking out into total dominance of the LPGA Tour, Annika Sorenstam asked Dave Stockton for help with her putting. Stockton, a 2-time PGA Championship winner and former Ryder Cup captain, is considered one of the best putters in the game's history.

In the September issue of Golf Digest, Stockton reveals one of the things he passed along to Sorenstam, whose improved performance with the flatstick ignited her dominant run:

Here's one of the secrets I gave Annika: You do not focus your eyes on the ball when you putt. You pick a spot one inch in front of the ball that you want the ball to roll over, and that's where you look. My whole career, I knew whether the ball was going into the hole within a split second after it left the face of the putter, because if it went over that spot an inch in front of the ball, it was going in the hole. Try it for the week, and I can all but guarantee you'll putt better than you ever have.
Stockton's full interview is well worth reading - interesting stuff. It's not online yet, but will eventually be posted in Golf Digest's My Shot archive.
