Quick Tip: One-Handed Pitch Shots

This quick tip is from Scott Seifferlein, PGA Director of Instruction at Mines Golf Academy in Grand Rapids, Mich.:

For years you've been following the advice, "keep your head down" and "don't look up." And now you have developed a wicked slice, you top the ball, you hit behind it, you might even have neck pain or lower back pain.

Poor golf shots are not caused by looking up. If they were, Annika Sorenstam would not be the greatest player in the world. Poor golf shots are caused by a lack of understanding of impact position. The club can't be on the way up at impact if you want good results.

To work on better impact position, practice 10- to 20-yard pitch shots with your lead hand only, then again with your trail hand only. Make sure your lead wrist is slightly bowed toward the target at impact. Make sure your trail wrist is bent backwards at impact. This position will allow the club to travel down through impact and for several inches after impact.

Remember, you hit bad golf shots because your club is on the way up at impact, not because you didn't keep your head down.
