"Big Break II": Episode 9 Recap

Tuesday December 7, 2004
The final twosome is revealed in Episode 9 of "The Big Break II." Who is eliminated? Who are the two players who'll be facing off in the finals? If you missed the ninth episode, read on for a brief recap. If you haven't yet seen it but taped it or plan to catch a repeat, don't continue unless you don't mind spoilers.

Bart Lower, Kip Henley and Don Donatello are the three remaining players. The one who wins the Skills Challenge and immunity for this episode is therefore guaranteed a spot in the finals.

The Skills Challenge is a combination of driving and putting. In the first round, each player hits four drives to a fairway marked off for distance. Each distance is worth a certain amount of points - 290 yards, 7 points, 280 yards, 6 points, and so on. Only drives in the fairway get points.

Bart gets 8 points on his first and fourth drives, 0 points on his others, for 16 points total. Kip scores 6 and 7 points, 0 points on his other drives, for 13 points total. Don scores 4 points, 6 points and 7 points, 0 on his other, for 17 points total to win the first round.

The second round of the Skills Challenge moves to the putting green. Each player hits one putt from three different distances - 15 feet, 40 feet and 65 feet. Each player will putt out at each distance, and the lowest cumulative stroke total after all three putts is the second-round winner, with each place worth points.

The points from the second-place finish are added to the player's points from the driving segment for a total score.

From 15 feet, all three players make 2s. From 40 feet, Bart sinks his putt while Don and Kip take 2 strokes. From 65 feet, all three players take 2 strokes. Bart wins the second round, but Don and Kip have to play off for second and third place.

After two playoff putts, Don earns second place with Kip third. Kip is eliminated from contention for immunity, but now another playoff takes place between Don and Bart, because they are tied in total points.

Don and Bart will have a "putt-off" to break their tie and see who wins immunity. Both players take two strokes on their first putt, and both take two on their second. But Don makes his third putt while Bart two-putts.

Don Donatello wins immunity - and wins a place in the final twosome.

Bart and Kip move on to the Mulligan Challenge, where each player will hit five flop shots over a pond to a green that is marked with bull's-eye targets. Each circle around the pin is worth points, closer to the pin being worth more.

The catch is that a wooden screen is between the players and the green. Bart and Kip must hit their flop shots from behind the screen. And there's a second twist: they get odds depending on how close to the screen they choose to place their balls. Three spots behind the screen are marked. The one farthest from the wall gives 1:1 odds; the middle one, 2:1 odds; the closest one, 3:1 odds.

Bart hits from the middle, 2:1 odds, and puts his ball in the 2-point circle, so earns 4 points. Kip chunks his shot for 0 points. Bart gets another 4-point shot in Round 2, while Kip earns 6. In Round 3, it's 4 more points for Bart and another chunk for Kip. In Round 4, Bart earns 6 points while Kip gets 0, so Bart clinches the win.

Bart Lower wins the Mulligan Challenge and gets a mulligan to use at any time in the Elimination Challenge.

The Elimination Challenge pits Bart and Kip in a 3-hole modified Stableford competition. A par is worth 1 point, birdie 3 points and eagle 5 points; a bogey is minus-1, double bogey or worse minus-2.

Both players par the first hole, so each has 1 point.

On the second hole, a par 3, Bart pushes his tee shot to the left rough while Kip hits the green. Bart's chip rolls well past the hole, so he takes his mulligan. He hits a much better shot to about 3 feet from the cup. He sinks the putt for par, while Kip 2-putts for par. Each player gets 1 point, so both stand at 2 points cumulatively.

The third hole is another par 4. Each player hits a good drive and each hits 9-iron into the green. Bart's shot is 25-30 feet from the hole. Kip hits what Bart calls the best shot he's ever seen, sticking his shot no more than 3-4 feet from the pin.

Bart's putt is short, but he makes the second putt for another par.

If Kip makes his birdie, he wins the Elimination Challenge and joins Don in the finals.

Kip's putt falls right in the center. Kip wins. Bart Lower is eliminated.

The final twosome for "The Big Break II" is Don Donatello and Kip Henley.
