"Big Break II": Episode 3 Recap

Tuesday October 12, 2004
Two players down, seven to go before a champion is crowned in "The Big Break II." If you missed the second episode, read on for a brief recap. If you haven't yet seen it but taped it or plan to catch a repeat, don't read on unless you don't mind spoilers.

Episode 3 begins with the gang, minus the first eliminated player, Jay McNair, heading to see the Cirque de Soleil. They find themselves in the front row, and Kip Henley eventually finds himself dragged on stage, dressed in a big diaper and baby bib, taking part in the show.

The other players begin calling Kip "Papa" after that display.

The next morning, it's back to the golf course for a new day of challenges.

First up: the skills challenge. The winner of the skills challenge does not have to take part in the elimination challenge, so is guaranteed to be staying another day.

The skills challenge requires the players to hit low shots under and between a large wooden "h" frame placed about 30 yards in front of them, to a green about 130-140 yards away. Competitors are eliminated over the course of several rounds until only Bart Lower and John Turk remain, and their shots must now go no higher than six feet off the ground to make the "h" frame's clearance.

Bart Lower wins the skills challenge by putting his shot around 29 feet from the pin, so Bart is safe for this episode.

On to the mulligan challenge, which is a simple putting test. Each contestant (other than Bart) begins with a 3-foot putt, then each succeeding round adds two feet to the length of the putt. When a player misses a putt, he's out.

Three players make it to the 11-feet distance, Don Donatello, the barefoot Davis Gunas Jr. and Sean Daly. Daly and Gunas miss their putts, then Donatello makes his to win a mulligan, which can be used, if needed, in the coming elimination challenge.

When Donatello makes his 11-footer, he gives a fist pump and lets out a "booyah!", which seems to rub a couple other competitors the wrong way.

The elimination challenge requires three different kinds of short wedge shots: a long bunker shut, a chip from the fairway and a shot over water. In each case, the contestants are aiming for a circle drawn around the pin at a distance of about six feet.

From each location, each golfer gets four tries to stop his ball within the circle. Each miss counts as a point; miss all four tries and you "earn" 5 points. The golfer with the most points at the end of the challenge goes home.

Don, David and Sean do not have to take the shot from the final location, across the water, because they have stuck the earlier shots - they are mathematically safe from elimination.

When the competitors reach the final location, Shelby Chrest trails. Mike Foster Jr., Scott Yancy and John Turk each have trouble with the final shot, giving Chrest a chance to stick around.

To do so, Chrest, who hits last, has to put his first or second shot within the circle. When he fails to do so, Shelby Chrest is the second player eliminated from "The Big Break II."
