Miyazato WDs Due to Effects of Car Crash

By February 27, 2013

Ai Miyazato has withdrawn from this week's LPGA tournament, the HSBC Women's Champions, due to lingering effects from an automobile accident last week in Thailand.

The accident happened Sunday night in Bangkok. Miyazato, Paula Creamer and Suzann Pettersen, plus members of their traveling parties, were motoring in five cars to the Bangkok airport, in heavy traffic at high speeds. The details of the accident were first reported by Pettersen herself, on Twitter and on her blog, complete with photos of the five cars scrunched together.

Pettersen was OK after the crash. Creamer reported some soreness and possible whiplash, but said her caddie was a little worse off than herself. Pettersen is fine to play this week and, so far, Creamer is, too.

Unfortunately, Miyazato seems to have gotten the worst of it among the three golfers, suffering from whiplash. But in a statement, Miyazato said her withdrawal was more a matter of prudence than a cause for alarm: "I have pain in my neck and shoulder, so I'll sit this tournament out as a precaution," Miyazato said.
