This Week: Farmers Insurance Open and Qatar Masters

What's on tap in the world of professional golf this week? The two biggest American stars - Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson - are playing the PGA Tour Farmers Insurance Open. And the European Tour's Commercialbank Qatar Masters has a great field of its own. Rory McIlroy, however, is taking the week off.

The Farmers Insurance Open is played at Torrey Pines, a track both Woods and Mickelson love. Woods has won this tournament six times, Mickelson three times.

Since 2000, eight golfers have shared the titles here: Mickelson (twice), Woods (five times, including four in a row from 2005-08), Jose Maria Olazabal, John Daly, Nick Watney, Ben Crane, Bubba Watson and Brandt Snedeker. Of those, only Olazabal is not in the field this week. Snedeker defeated Kyle Stanley in a playoff to win the 2012 Farmers Insurance Open.

Mickelson's 2013 season didn't begin with a bang at last week's Humana Challenge - he finished tied for 37th - but it was a whole lot better than Woods' missed cut in Abu Dhabi.

Others in the Farmers field include Rickie Fowler, Nicolas Colsaerts, Bill Haas, Dustin Johnson, Keegan Bradley, Ryo Ishikawa and Hunter Mahan.

Meanwhile, the European Tour continues its desert swing with the Qatar Masters, where the defending champ is Paul Lawrie.

The strong field that will tackle Doha Golf Club includes Justin Rose, Louis Oosthuizen, Jason Dufner, Sergio Garcia, Peter Hanson, Ernie Els, Martin Kaymer, Branden Grace, Matteo Manassero, Thomas Bjorn, Retief Goosen and Paul Casey.

Also of note this week is the Women's New South Wales Open in Australia. That's the tournament where amateur Lydia Ko earned her first win in a pro tour event last year at age 14. Ko is back to defend.
