And they both missed the cut. Not the kind of start that they - or golf fans - were hoping for.
Woods missed the cut by one stroke, McIlroy (in his official debut as a member, along with Woods, of Team Nike) by four strokes.
Woods' opening round 72 included a topped, 90-yard drive. Then he shot 75 in Round 2, finishing at 3-over 147. Woods' failure to make the weekend was probably more painful because of a 2-stroke penalty he incurred in the second for an improper drop. Without that penalty, he would have made the cut.
McIlroy carded consecutive rounds of 75 to post 4-over 150. McIlroy switched away from the Nike Method putter he used in the first round and back to his old Scotty Cameron for the second, but his score didn't improve any. And now both Woods and McIlroy are out of the tournament.
Justin Rose is the midway leader at 136. View the scoreboard
