RocketBallz? Yes, RocketBallz Clubs (Not Balls) From TaylorMade

By , About.com Guide   December 13, 2011

Follow me on:

Golf club naming conventions are usually pretty staid - often clubs are tagged with a number and letter, such as TaylorMade's own R-series (R7, R9, R11). That's one reason TaylorMade's new 2012 series of clubs is drawing such attention for its name: RocketBallz.

That can be shortened to RBZ (and TaylorMade alternates between RocketBallz and RBZ in its promotional materials). But the name RocketBallz seems so out of character that TaylorMade issued a news release just about the name itself.

The name, as you can probably guess, derives according to TaylorMade from the regularity of the expression "like a rocket" to describe the ball coming off the face when early prototypes were shared with TaylorMade tour staff.

But golf is filled with double entendres, and there are plenty of sniggers going around the golf world at the introduction of RocketBallz. And while RocketBallz might be a name many would call silly or goofy or dumb or even in poor taste, if it generates attention and discussion then it's a name that works for the company. (Many golfers will like the name precisely because it's silly.)

And even if you're one of those who think the name might be a little ... tasteless, well, "RocketBallz" is still nowhere near the recordholder in that category. Back in 2004 a small company introduced a driver it named the Big D***.

Its doubtful the name will have any impact one way or the other on golfers' decisions whether to try or buy the new clubs. The TaylorMade RocketBallz line, which arrives in early 2012, includes drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons. But not yet any ballz. I mean balls. You have to think those will arrive shortly, however.
