The 2011 Solheim Cup entered the final day - Sunday singles - tied at 8-8. And the first point of the singles session has gone to Team Europe. But not because of a completed match victory; rather, because Cristie Kerr was forced to withdraw due to injury.
Kerr withdrew without starting her match against Karen Stupples, so Stupples was given the win in a walkover. That gave Europe a 9-8 lead over the USA.
Entering the day, Team USA needed to win six of the 12 singles points to retain the Solheim Cup; Europe needed to claim 6.5 of the 12 singles points to win it.
Kerr has had her right wrist taped all week due to tendinitis, and she's been seen shaking that wrist after a few shots in earlier matches. It apparently worsened overnight and when Kerr tried to warm up prior to the start of her match against Stupples, she just couldn't properly hold onto the club. Kerr broke down sobbing on the driving range when she realized she couldn't play. Kerr is such a fighter, you know she must have been in tremendous pain to take the step of withdrawing.
As I write this update, the Solheim Cup play is suspended due to rain (water accumulation on the course). In the other 11 matches, USA leads in five, Europe leads in four, two are square. For match updates, LPGA.com has live scoring.
