Europe Extends Solheim Lead in Saturday Morning Session

Following the Saturday morning foursomes, Team Europe leads Team USA by two points - 7 to 5 - at the 2011 Solheim Cup. Europe won the morning session by a point, 2.5 to 1.5.

Caroline Hedwall/Sophie Gustafson and Maria Hjorth/Anna Nordqvist - a Swedish armada? - won matches for Europe; Morgan Pressel/Ryann O'Toole won one for the USA; and the fourth match was halved (see scores).

And how about those rookies? Controversial captain's pick O'Toole played well throughout and made a huge putt late in a match on Friday to help secure a half-point, and gets a win today. And Hedwall, about whom the European side had some concerns over recent form, now has two wins.

Not surprisingly, both these rookies are playing again in the Saturday afternoon fourballs (see pairings).

So O'Toole will wind up playing in four out of a possible five matches. Vicky Hurst and Christina Kim, meanwhile, are not playing at all on Saturday, so wind up playing in just two matches each. Europe had one player - Christel Boeljon - sit out Friday's play, but Boeljon played twice today and will finish with three matches played.

See our 2011 Solheim Cup page for the full results plus Saturday afternoon pairings, and check our main Solheim Cup page for tournament history and records.
