Last week we told you about the golf marathon planned by Bob Kurtz with a post headlined, "Would you play 2,000 Holes In One Week?"

Well, Kurtz - whose marathon began at 10 a.m. on June 4 and ended at 10 a.m. on June 11 - didn't quite make it to 2,000. He "settled" for 1,850 holes of golf played - just short of 103 rounds of golf in one week. And that's just short of 15 rounds of golf per day, every day for seven days.

By the way, Kurtz is 70 years old. And he told The Huntsville Times that he plans to play in a tournament on the Sunbelt Tour, a regional senior tour, this week.

His average score for each 18-hole round? 74.55.

Kurtz's achievement was recognized as an official Guinness world record by representatives of Guinness who were onsite at the Quail Creek Golf Resort in Hartselle, Alabama. Kurtz also told the Hunstville paper that he raised "thousands" of dollars for the victims of recent Alabama tornadoes. (You can still make a donation via Kurtz's website, golfsironman.com.)

The Huntsville paper described the effort:

The temperature builds with the height of the sun, and before long, will touch 100 degrees. Kurtz's shirt is darkened by sweat, his face is reddened by the sun, and his fingers are taped to ease the pain of blisters. ...

He did it with the help of nearly 100 volunteers, teeing up balls, tracking scores and running the operation. He did it through spells of dehydration, sore hands, sore feet, blood blisters, record-setting heat and nightly IV drips.

Kurtz's attitude afterward? He wishes he had made more putts. Well, there's one thing typical about this very atypical golfer.
