This Week: The Heritage

The Heritage tees off this week at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C., for what might be the final time. Without a sponsor since Verizon left after the 2010 tournament, the event is taking place this year, the Associated Press reported, on the strength of $4 million in tournament reserves plus $1 million from local governments.

But the off-course issues are unlikely to overshadow the on-course play this week, because The Heritage often produces good drama. Last year, Jim Furyk beat Brian Davis in a playoff after Davis called a penalty on himself. Furyk is back to defend his title, and Davis returns after defending the game's honor code.

Among others in the field are Luke Donald, Matt Kuchar, Graeme McDowell, Ernie Els, Ian Poulter, Francesco Molinari, Zach Johnson, Jason Day, Camilo Villegas and Rickie Fowler.

One thing is likely this week: We'll see some good putting at Harbour Town. David Frost set the PGA Tour record for fewest putts in one tournament at Harbour Town in 2005, at what was then called the MCI Heritage. In fact, three of the top four 72-hole putting performances in tour history have happened at Harbour Town.
