The biggest win of Cheyenne Woods' amateur golf career happened on Sunday at the Atlantic Coast Conference championship tournament. And Woods - niece of Tiger Woods - dominated, winning by seven strokes.
Woods, a junior at Wake Forest University, began the final round tied for the lead with North Carolina's Allie White. But Woods pulled away from White and the field over the last 18, posting the only sub-70 round of the day.
Woods carded rounds of 70, 70 and 68 to finish at 5-under 208, with White in second place at 215 (full scores). (North Carolina did win the team title with Wake Forest finishing in fourth place.) The 68 is Woods' new personal best in collegiate competition. (She set the Wake Forest single-season scoring average record in the 2009-2010 season.)
The ACC championship is Woods' first victory in the 2010-11 NCAA golf season, although she did have a third-place at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in February. It's her third victory in three seasons at Wake Forest; she previously won the Bryan National Collegiate in the 2009-2010 season; and teamed with Michelle Shin to win the Women's Collegiate Team Championship in 2010.
Going into the ACC tournament, Cheyenne Woods was ranked No. 38 in the Golfweek/Sagarin women's college golf rankings; and was No. 76 in the Women's World Amateur Golf Ranking (administered by the R&A and USGA).
