Jose Maria Olazabal today was officially named Team Europe captain for the 2012 Ryder Cup. A great player, a great sportsman, Olazabal will match up against his American counterpart - about whom the same adjectives apply - Davis Love III. Love will be formally introduced as Team USA captain on Thursday at Medinah Country Club, site of the 2012 match.
Olazabal is one of the most successful players in Ryder Cup history, winning 18 matches and earning 20.5 points for his side. Olazabal's overall record is 18-8-5, and that .661 winning percentage is the second-best in European team history among players with at least 15 matches played.
Love's overall record is 9-12-5, a .442 winning percentage, and Olazabal won four of their five matches against one another (all team matches). There's no shame in that, though, given that Olazabal, with "Spanish Armada" partner Seve Ballesteros, holds the record for most points earned by a Ryder Cup partnership - 12. That's twice as many points as any other partnership has earned.
