Song, Korda Lead LPGA Q-School Grads

By , About.com Guide   December 12, 2010

Follow me on:

What seems like a long time ago, Aree Song was an amateur whiz kid in the world of golf. She finished 10th in the 2000 Kraft Nabisco Championship at age 13. She was fifth at the 2003 U.S. Women's Open as a 16-year-old amateur.

Song made it through Q-School and was a rookie pro, 17 years old when the season started (getting a minimum-age exemption from the LPGA), in 2004. That year she hit an amazing fairway-wood approach to the final green at the Kraft Nabisco, sank the eagle putt, and nearly took a major away from Grace Park.

There are quite a few teen whiz kids in women's golf these days, and 17-year-old Jessica Korda is one of them.

Song - back in Q-School after several years of injuries and poor play - and Korda finished 1-2 at the 2010 LPGA Q-School final stage tournament on Sunday, leading 20 golfers who earned their cards for the 2011 season.

Song finished the 5-round tournament at 6-under 354, with Korda one stroke back. Korda entered the tournament unsure of whether she would go to college or go to the pros. This makes her decision for her.

The other 18 golfers, in order of finish, who earned the highest exemption status up for grabs at Q-School, are: Jimin Jeong, Danah Ford Bordner, Dewi Claire Schreefel, Pornanong Phatlum, Reilley Rankin, Jeehae Lee, Belen Mozo, Angela Oh, Nicole Hage, Pernilla Lindberg, Dori Carter, Kimberly Kim, Stephanie Sherlock, Mollie Fankhauser, Jennie Lee, Christel Boeljon, Sara Brown and Jin Young Pak.

The usual suspects: Former LPGA players, former college and/or amateur stars. Plus a Big Breaker in Sara "No H" Brown.

Alas, the Sarah Brown who does have an "h" was one of the big tumblers in the final round. That Brown - she's the golfer who was involved in that incorrect DQ over grooves on the Futures Tour in 2010 - began the final round in 11th place, but ended it in 44th after an 83.

Libby Smith started Round 5 in third place, shot 82 and fell to 22nd, outside the top exemption category. Those finishing 21st through 30th gained a lower level of status that will get them into few - if any - LPGA events in 2011.
