Ryder Cup: US Ahead 6-4 Following Second Session

Padraig Harrington finally won a Ryder Cup match again, but Phil Mickelson didn't. A rules blunder coast one side a hole, but their match was halved. And Rory McIlroy made two late mistakes that helped Team USA take a 6-4 lead over Team Europe following the second session of the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Here are the scores from Saturday's foursomes matches:

  • Tiger Woods/Steve Stricker, USA, def. Miguel Angel Jimenez/Peter Hanson, Europe, 4 and 3
  • Zach Johnson/Hunter Mahan, USA, def. Edoardo Molinari/Franceso Molinari, Europe, 2-up
  • Jim Furyk/Rickie Fowler, USA, halved with Lee Westwood/Martin Kaymer, Europe
  • Padraig Harrington/Ross Fisher, Europe, def. Phil Mickelson/Dustin Johnson, USA, 3 and 2
  • Ian Poulter/Luke Donald, Europe, def. Bubba Watson/Jeff Overton, 2 and 1
  • Stewart Cink/Matt Kuchar, USA, def. Graeme McDowell/Rory McIlroy, Europe, 1-up

Harrington's win with partner Fisher was Paddy's first victory in his last Ryder Cup 10 matches. At the 2008 Ryder Cup, Harrington went 0-3-1, and in 2006 he was 0-4-1. So far in 2010, he's 1-1.

Mickelson is 0-2 in 2010, and those two losses sent Mickelson into a tie for the most losses ever by an American in Ryder Cup player.

In the Furyk/Fowler vs. Westwood/Kaymer match, Fowler made an incorrect drop on the fourth hole that resulted in a loss-of-hole penalty. But the rookie sank a testy putt on the 18th hole to salvage a halve.

Woods and Stricker's partnership continues to be a good one. They finished off a win early this morning, won again in the foursomes session, and between the 2009 Presidents Cup and 2010 Ryder Cup are now 6-0 together.

The McDowell/McIlroy vs. Cink/Kuchar match was the last one on Celtic Manor during the morning foursomes, and the teams were square as they reached the par-3 17th. It appeared the Euros were going 1-up, however, when McDowell stuck his tee shot about six feet from the pin, while Kuchar's tee shot was about 25 feet away. Then Cink sank the long putt and McIlroy missed the (relatively) short one, and the Americans went 1-up.

On the 18th hole, McIlroy hit a terrible wedge shot that found a greenside bunker and allowed the US side to hold on for the win, giving Team USA the 6-4 lead at the completion of the session.

Here are the matches that will start today, late afternoon in Wales, and finish Sunday morning (weather permitting):
