As darkness fell on Saturday at the 2010 Ryder Cup, a pall certainly fell across Team USA. That's because after falling behind, 6-4, following the foursomes session earlier in the day, Team Europe started the late afternoon session on fire.
When play was suspended near sunset at Celtic Manor, Team Europe led all six matches on the course, two foursomes and four fourballs. Here is the standing of those matches:
Foursomes
- Luke Donald/Lee Westwood, Europe, lead Steve Stricker/Tiger Woods, USA, 4-up through 9 holes
- Graeme McDowell/Rory McIlory, Europe, lead Zach Johnson/Hunter Mahan, USA, 3-up through 7 holes
Fourball
- Padraig Harrington/Ross Fisher, Europe, lead Jim Furyk/Dustin Johnson, USA, 1-up through 8 holes.
- Peter Hanson/Miguel Angel Jimenez, Europe, lead Bubba Watson/Jeff Overton, USA, 2-up through 6 holes
- Edoardo Molinari/Francesco Molinari, Europe, lead Stewart Cink/Matt Kuchar, USA, 1-up through 5 holes
- Ian Poulter/Martin Kaymer, Europe, lead Phil Mickelson/Rickie Fowler, USA, 2-up through 4 holes
Weather permitting, play in these matches resumes Sunday morning, followed by 12 singles matches. Hopefully, we'll be able to finish the 2010 Ryder Cup on schedule. But the weather forecast for Sunday is not good - heavy rain is expected. With that forecast, a Monday finish might be in the offing.
